1. Who Is Post Departure Travel Insurance for?
Our post departure travel insurance is ideal for:
- Travellers who forgot to buy travel insurance before their departure
- Long-term travellers such as backpackers and gap years who want to extend their trip for more than three months
- Those who need travel insurance whilst already abroad—and want it fast
2. What Should I Know About Buying Travel Insurance While Already Travelling?
If you’re already abroad and looking to purchase travel insurance, there are some important conditions and limitations you should be
- Cover Starts the Day After the Purchase Date of the Policy
- Waiting Periods Apply: Your policy will typically begin the day after purchase. However, cover for any illness-related medical expenses will only start after a 14-day waiting period
- No Cover for Pre-Existing Conditions: Any medical condition you had before taking out the policy won’t be covered
- Limited Policy Types: You can only purchase Short Stay or Long Stay policies when arranging cover while already abroad
- Trip Duration Limits Apply: Your policy must cover the entire remainder of your trip, as long as your trip doesn’t exceed the maximum trip length allowed for your age under the Voyager Plus policy
- No Cooling-Off Period: Unlike standard policies, the usual 14-day cancellation window (‘cooling-off period’) doesn’t apply when buying a policy after your trip has started
3. Which Type of Policy Should You Choose When Buying Travel Insurance While Already Abroad?
The right policy type depends on the length of time remaining on your trip:
- Short Stay Policy: If your entire trip is less than 62 days or fewer, a Short Stay policy is likely the most suitable option.
- Long Stay Policy: If you have more than three months remaining and total duration of your trip is less than 18 months, a Long Stay policy would be more appropriate.
Be sure to choose the policy type that matches the duration of your remaining time abroad when getting a quote.
4. What Destinations Are Covered Under Travel Insurance for Already Overseas?

UK Only Coverage (For UK Residents Only)
- Includes England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, as well as Isle of Man and the Channel Islands
Europe Coverage
- Includes all of Area 1, Isle of Man and the Channel Islands, Western Europe, Countries with a Mediterranean coastline (excluding Algeria, Libya, Syria, and Israel) and the Canary Islands, Madeira, and Iceland
Worldwide Coverage
If you're trip involves travelling beyond Europe, you’ll need worldwide travel insurance. There are two options:
- Area 3: Includes all countries in Areas 1 & 2, plus worldwide (excluding North America, the USA, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, the Bahamas, and Bermuda)
- Area 4: Includes all countries in Areas 1, 2 & 3, plus North America, the USA, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, the Bahamas, and Bermuda
