4. Do You Need Travel Insurance for Working Overseas If You Have a GHIC?

If you're planning long-term travel in Europe, or part of your trip will be in Europe, you should consider arranging travel insurance for working overseas.

The GHIC (Global Health Insurance Card) gives you access to state-provided healthcare in the EU on the same terms as a local resident. However, there are certain things that are not covered under GHIC.

For example, if you become unwell or are injured during your trip, you may need private medical treatment. The cost of this treatment would not be covered by your GHIC.

It also doesn't cover the cost of repatriation, which means returning you home if medically necessary.

Additionally, travel insurance for working overseas covers other aspects of your trip. This includes holiday cancellation, missed departure, travel delays and lost or damaged baggage.

5. What Destinations Are Covered Under Voyager Plus Working Holiday Insurance?

At Voyager Plus, we offer working holiday insurance for trips across Europe and worldwide.

Our policy is divided into three geographic areas, so you can choose the area of cover that matches your destination.

The area you need depends on your destination included in your trip.

Europe Cover (Area 2)

  • Includes England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland
  • Includes the destinations across Europe, the Channel Islands, Isle of Man, Canary Islands, Madeira and Iceland.
  • Some countries and territories are excluded, including Algeria, Libya, Syria and Israel.

Worldwide Cover (Area 3 and 4)

If your trip takes you outside Europe, you'll need a policy with worldwide cover:

  • Area 3: Includes all countries in Areas 1 & 2, plus worldwide (excluding North America, the USA, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, the Bahamas, and Bermuda)
  • Area 4: Includes all countries in Areas 1, 2 & 3, plus North America, the USA, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, the Bahamas, and Bermuda
6. Does Travel Insurance Cover Working Abroad for Business Trips?

Yes, our working abroad travel insurance does include cover for business trips. To ensure your policy includes cover for business trips, you would need to add the business plus option.

If you run your own business or work for a company, you may be looking to arrange a policy that covers all employees’ business travel for the year. If so, dedicated business travel insurance may be a more suitable option for you.

In this case, another Voyager Insurance brand, VoyageProtect, may be able to help.
