Frequently Asked Questions About Group Travel Insurance
1. What is Group Travel Insurance?
Group travel insurance is specialist travel insurance that allows several people travelling together to be covered under one policy. It can be a convenient option when you're arranging cover for a group rather than taking out separate policies for each traveller.
Like other types of travel insurance, a group policy can provide cover for a range of things that could go wrong before or during your trip.
You can also add optional cover to your policy, such as Winter Sports Cover for skiing and snowboarding. This can give you group ski travel insurance for eligible winter sports activities.
2. Who is Group Holiday Insurance For?
Our holiday insurance for groups may be suitable for:
- Friends travelling together – Whether you're heading abroad for a relaxing getaway or an adventure with friends.
- Societies and Interest Groups – For example a birdwatching group or rotary club.
- University groups – Suitable for students travelling together, including group ski trips and other organised holidays.
- Clubs and youth groups – Suitable for certain organised group trips, such as social clubs and youth groups.
3. Can You Get Large Group Travel Insurance with Voyager Plus?
Yes. Our large group travel insurance is available online for groups of 5 to 50 people.
If you're travelling with more than 50 people, please call us on +44 (0)1483 806 680. Our team can help you arrange large group holiday insurance cover.
4. What’s The Difference Between a Family Policy and Group Policy?
A family policy is designed for families travelling together. This consists of one or two adults with their children, up to age 20 if they are in full-time education.
A group policy is designed for multiple adults travelling together. For example, if you're looking for travel insurance for friends travelling together, a group policy may be more suitable.
Group trip insurance can also be suitable for families travelling together if everyone is an adult. For example, your adult children may be joining you on the family holiday. In this case, you could arrange cover for everyone under one group policy.
5. Can You Travel Separately on Group Travel Insurance?
Group travel insurance is designed for people who are travelling together on the same trip. This means everyone named on the policy should leave and return home on the same dates.
If members of your group are planning to travel separately or have different travel dates, a group travel insurance policy may not be suitable for your trip. In this case, you may need to arrange separate travel insurance policies for those travelling independently.
6. What Destinations Are Covered Under Voyager Plus Group Holiday Insurance?
At Voyager Plus, we offer holiday insurance for group trips within the UK, across Europe and worldwide.
Our policy is divided into four geographic areas, so you can choose the appropriate cover for your destination:
UK Only (Area 1)
- Includes England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland
- Only available for UK residents looking for cover for UK trips
Europe Cover (Area 2)
- Includes the UK, destinations across Europe, the Channel Islands, Isle of Man, Canary Islands, Madeira and Iceland.
- Some countries and territories are excluded, including Algeria, Libya, Syria and Israel.
Worldwide Cover (Area 3 and 4)
If your group trip takes you outside Europe, you'll need a policy with worldwide cover
- Area 3: Includes all countries in Areas 1 & 2, plus worldwide (excluding North America, the USA, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, the Bahamas, and Bermuda)
- Area 4: Includes all countries in Areas 1, 2 & 3, plus North America, the USA, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, the Bahamas, and Bermuda
7. Would You Still Need Group Travel Insurance to Europe if You Have a GHIC?
Yes. You should not rely on your GHIC (Global Health Insurance Card) alone and should still arrange travel insurance before you travel. A GHIC gives you access to state healthcare in the EU, but it has limitations.
For example, it does not cover private medical treatment, even if this is the most suitable option for you. The GHIC also does not cover the cost of repatriation, which means returning you home if medically necessary.
8. Is it Needed to Arrange Group Travel Insurance for a UK Trip?
Yes. Even if you're travelling within the UK, it is worth arranging group holiday insurance for a UK getaway, as unexpected events can still affect your group trip.
If you're taking out an annual group policy, there are some requirements to be aware of:
- UK getaways must include a minimum of two nights away from home.
- You must also have pre-booked and pre-paid accommodation or transport for the group getaway.
9. How Do I Get a Group Travel Insurance Quote?
Getting a quote for group travel with Voyager Plus is quick and straightforward. Just follow these steps:
- Click the “Get a Quote” button
- Enter the personal details of each traveller and your trip details
- Compare the four levels of cover and choose the one that’s right for your group
