What is Expat Travel Insurance?

Posted in General Travel Travel Insurance, epxat travel insurance, what is expat insurance on 28 March 2024

Travel Insurance is there to protect you and anyone else named on your policy from the unexpected whilst travelling. This can include situations where you require emergency medical treatment, or your bags are lost for example. It is there to provide peace of mind for you on your holidays. But what is expat insurance and is it different?

Expatriate Travel Insurance is there to provide those who have potentially been sent abroad by an employer, taken up a position outside of the UK, or find themselves in a similar situation, with financial protection on their holidays.

As an expatriate living abroad, it can be difficult to find Travel Insurance that is suitable for you. For example, you may not be too familiar with the language in your new country, but all available Travel Insurance policies are written in the native language. That’s where Voyager’s Expatriate Travel Insurance comes in.

International living can be difficult for those who may not have experienced it before. It can bring with it a new language, new customs and cultures, potentially new foods, and a new healthcare system to name a few. Amongst all this, having a sense of normalcy can be very needed which extends to Travel Insurance as well.

Voyager Plus’s Travel Insurance for Expats is written in English so that it is fully understandable and doesn’t require translation. It is designed specifically with you in mind meaning that if you still consider the UK your native home, you are eligible to purchase one of our policies.

In what countries can get Expat Insurance?

Voyager Plus’s Expat Insurance is available to those residing in eligible European Economic Area (EEA) countries. These countries include:

  • Belgium
  • Cyprus
  • France
  • Germany
  • Greece
  • Italy
  • Malta
  • the Netherlands
  • Poland
  • Portugal
  • Republic of Ireland
  • Spain.
Are there any differences in cover for Europe?

No, our policies provide expats with the same great cover as if you were residing in the UK. As an expat, you will be provided with the ability to pay for your policy in Euros instead of British Pounds, however, the actual cover the policy provides is the same.

This means that you will still receive cover for cancellation, emergency medical expenses, baggage and more. Expat Travel Insurance policies are available as Single Trip, Annual Multi-trip, Long Stay policies.

Can you get cover for pre-existing medical condition?

This will differ from company to company, however, at Voyager Plus, you can get cover for 100s of pre-existing medical conditions so long as you declare these conditions when required. When purchasing a policy from us you will be asked to declare your medical conditions and those of anyone named on the policy meaning you will need to know their medical history.

It is vital that you declare any conditions you may have in case you require medical care or emergency assistance whilst abroad. If you fail to declare your conditions and require treatment whilst abroad then you may not be covered, and your insurer may deny your claim.

How much does Expat Travel Insurance cost?

Again, this will differ from company to company, but with Voyager Plus Expatriate Travel Insurance you can get extensive cover from under £25*.

Is Expat Insurance and Non-UK Resident the same?

In essence, yes, both policies provide those not living in the UK with appropriate Travel Insurance. Those looking for Travel Insurance for non-UK residents are often expats themselves anyway who are looking for a Travel Insurance policy that they can understand.
