Britain’s Favourite Holiday Destinations

With the British Summer not yet living up to what we had all hoped for, there is still time to get away to sunnier climates. If you are considering where to go on holiday this summer, then you may be after some holiday ideas which is exactly what we have for you. Below are some of Britain’s favourite holiday destinations based on the number of travellers that visited those countries last year!

1.      Spain

Spain was by far and away the preferred holiday destination for brits in 2022 and its not hard to see why. With lots of sun, short plane journeys and lots of places to choose from, its easy to see why Spain was so popular last year and why it’s likely to be one of the best holiday destinations 2023.

In fact, over 15 million Brits visited Spain last year, putting the country firmly on top of this list.

2.      France

France provides a great mix of city breaks and sandy beaches which is why it is one of the UK’s top places to visit. Whether you are heading to the south of France to soak up the sun or are looking to see the Eiffel Tower and sample the food and drink in Paris. Perhaps you’re looking for a theme park and are planning to head to Disneyland Paris for a day or two.

With less than half the number of visitors last year compared to Spain, France still had over 7 million British visitors making it a worthy second place on this list.

3.      Italy

Another popular destination for many Brits is Italy. During the summer holidays many flock to Italy to take advantage of the great weather, great food, cultural locations, and some beautiful towns and beaches. If you’re a lover of all things foody then Italy is surely one of your go to destinations.

Whilst Italy only just pipped Greece to third spot, 4 million Brits still visited this incredible country last year.

4.      Greece

With plenty of white sand beaches and social media ready backdrops, it’s easy to see why Greece ranks so highly on this list. There are so many Islands and areas to choose from you really can take your pick! Couples especially look to visit Santorini and for good reason. Santorini is known for its stunning backdrops and romantic hotels.

Marginally ahead of 5th spot, Greece welcomed 3.7 million UK travellers in 2022, a number that is sure to grow over the next few years.

5.      Portugal

Blue water and even bluer skies, Portugal is a top holiday destination for many. From golf and spa holidays to beach holidays or even city breaks there are a lot of reasons to get excited about visiting Portugal.

In a very close run race, Portugal narrowly lost out on 4th spot with 3.6 million Brits visiting the country.

6.      USA

The USA is a big place with so many places to visit. Whether you aim for the East or West coast you’ll be spoilt for choice. New York, Washington, Miami, Tampa and more to the East, LA, San Francisco, San Diego, and Seattle to the West, the choice is yours. If the coasts aren’t your thing, then you can head in land and find one of the spectacular national parks that the USA has to offer.

In fact, last year alone, 3.4 million Brits made the choice to visit the USA, firmly placing the country at number 6 on this list.

7.      Ireland

If the likes of Italy and Greece aren’t for you then you may want to look at Ireland and perhaps a city break to Dublin. Lively night life, the Guinness factory and giant’s causeway are just some of the attractions that may lure you to Ireland.

Whilst Ireland is no far-flung destination for Brits, Ireland still welcomed 2.8 million UK travellers last year!

8.      Turkey

You can find some great deals on trips to Turkey and with the seemingly endless Aegean Sea on your doorstep, why wouldn’t you take advantage of the great prices. In Turkey you will also find some of the nicest beaches in Europe and some magnificent Roman ruins!

Coming in at 8th on this list, Turkey had 2.6 million Brits visit in 2022, but this is more than likely to increase this year!

9.      Poland

Krakow, Warsaw, Gdansk, 3 beautiful cities for you to visit on your trip to Poland. There are 15 UNESCO World Heritage Sites including some significant historical and cultural sites for you to visit whilst you are in Poland. Plus there are lakes, mountains and plenty of cafes and restaurants for you to visit!

Still welcoming well over 2 million British travellers last year, Poland is definitely one to consider for a city break in 2023.

10.   Netherlands

Castles, Cafes, Canals, and Cultural sites are the 4 c’s of the Netherlands. There are so many things to see and do in the Netherlands from the centuries-old windmills, tulip fields, nightlife and a wealth of art – you certainly won’t be bored visiting here.

With so many reasons to visit the Netherlands, 1.9 million brits found themselves travelling there last year, firmly placing them 10th on our list.

 

There are so many places for you to consider for your holiday this summer including some destinations further afield from South America, the Canary Islands, South Africa and so much more! Even if you’re not planning to get away this summer, there’s no reason why you couldn’t consider any of these destinations for some winter sun or city breaks.
