Florida requires International Driving Permit

As of the 1st of January 2013 Florida law now strictly requires foreign drivers to carry an International Driving Permit. This law was introduced in order to make it easier for law enforcement officers in Florida to read the particulars of foreign drivers.

However, the Florida police are not actively enforcing it currently due to some confusion as to whether the legislation contravenes the Geneva Convention of Road Traffic.

If you are travelling to the United States and renting a vehicle whilst you are there it may be prudent to obtain an International Driving Permit. Drivers can obtain an International Driving Permit from Post Offices: www.postoffice.co.uk/international-driving-permit at a cost of £5.50. Be aware than an International Driving Licence is not the same and will not be accepted in Florida.

Drivers are also reminded that many car hire companies require not only the UK driving licence card but also the paper counterpart.
